To promote the film, Lionsgate teamed with IMAX to release a one-hour, virtual reality IMAX experience titled John Wick: Chapter 2 - The World's Greatest Assassin, which made its debut on July 12, 2017 at theaters around the U.S. The film also premiered in France as John Wick Chapter 2: Parabellum - Les Chiens de l’ombre, on January 31, 2018.
On January 29, 2018, Lionsgate announced that it had renewed John Wick with an option for a third film. The second film grossed $183 million worldwide, with the final total grossed having $264 million, while the first installment grossed $85.9 million worldwide. Reeves was also promoted as a brand by Lionsgate for an action franchise.
On March 8, 2018, Variety reported that Keanu Reeves was in negotiations to return as Wick for the third film, which was initially expected to begin filming in March 2018. On June 8, 2018, Lionsgate filed to trademark the phrase `John Wick World', presumably making a reference to the world the protagonist lives in. Keanu Reeves would officially return in the following April, ready to start shooting the next film at the end of the year. On June 7, 2018, Lionsgate moved up the release of the film by one month from its initial planned release of October 21, 2018.
John Wick: Chapter 2 premiered at the 63rd San Sebastián International Film Festival on July 20, 2017. The film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on April 14, 2018, by Summit Entertainment. In the United Kingdom, the film was granted a 15 certificate by the British Board of Film Classification on September 4, 2017.
