Joe Frankel is a Senior Lecturer at the Johns Hopkins University and a member of the Linguistics department. He is an expert in phonetics and language analysis, with research interest in predictive phonetic modeling, acoustic feature analysis, and the application of speech synthesis. He has worked extensively in the area of acoustic feature representation, and has published widely on this topic. He has also worked on modeling variability in phonetic and acoustic data, and has more recently worked on modeling acoustic variability in conversational speech. He has also worked on speech synthesis, particularly in the area of constrained dynamic clustering. He has worked extensively on developing language models for natural languages, and he has also developed speech recognition software for non-native languages, and the use of audio/visual data for language recognition. He is currently working on a number of research projects. He has spoken at the Interspeech, ICASSP, and Darpa workshops, and his papers have been published in the Journal of Phonetics, the Journal of Computer Assisted Intervention, the International Journal of Computer Assisted Speech and Language Research, the Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research, and the Journal of the International Phonetic Association.
Acoustic parameterization. The input to the MLPs are PLP cepstra computed using HTK. In order to computecompatible front-end features, this HCopy config file should be used. Oncethe base parameters (12 PLP cepstra plus energy) have been computed, these should be mean and variance normalized on a per-speaker basis, then expanded to include first a second order derivatives, and scaledagainst this global variance. Ascript which takes care of this process is available on request. 827ec27edc
