During the early years of Indian independence, the saffron flag was widely used by the Hindu nationalists as one of the symbols of the anti-colonial struggle. The saffron flag was used for various movements, including the Quit India Movement in 1942, with the flag on the top hoisting a ten-pointed red star in a white circle, and the yellow flag of the Indian National Army (INA) on the bottom hoisting the saffron flag. The saffron flag was flown in the INA during its campaign to capture Kashmir.[24]
The saffron flag was also flown at the inauguration of S. Radhakrishnan in the second term as President of India in 1972, after he was sworn-in as the first President of the Republic of India on 30 January that year. The then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, who was born on this day in 1917, brought the saffron flag to mark the occasion. The saffron flag was used in the swearing-in ceremony of the second term of V. V. Giri in 1989. It was also used to mark the Republic Day of 1990, the first Republic Day of the newly formed post-Independence India, which also happened to be the Silver Jubilee of Indian independence. Then President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who was born on this day in 1931, raised the saffron flag at the event.
The saffron flag was displayed at the Republic Day Parade of 1968, and again by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1989, when Indira Gandhi sent the saffron flag to the party headquarters to be flown at the top of a pole as a symbol of the nation in the aftermath of the assassination of her son, Rajiv Gandhi, by Tamil Tigers in 1991.
The saffron flag was also used at the ceremony of the swearing-in of Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister on 10 January 1966, the first woman to head a government. The flag was hoisted by the Prime Minister at Rajghat, the premises of the Parliament, and was flown from all government and public offices during the swearing-in ceremony.
The saffron flag was held in high esteem by the RSS in the 1920s. Its leaders used it as a symbol of Hindu resurgence. Hedgewar demanded that the RSS members should hold the saffron flag high above their heads. The RSS claimed that it should be held in the highest reverence for all those who do not make compromises with the British. For this reason, the saffron flag has remained a symbol of the Hindutva movement.
